Holidays in Singapore

Celebrations you should definitely check out

National Day

Each year on August 9, Singapore's National Day is celebrated to recognize the nation's independence, gained in 1965. During the event, many performances occur, notably, a speech from the prime minister, a grand parade, an Air Force flyby, and an incredible fireworks display. After the skydiving, song performances, and interactive presentations that kick off National Day, the parade recognizes many groups including the Armed Forces, Police Force, and Civil Defence Force, capped off by a fireworks show with the year's theme song followed by the national anthem.

Vesak Day

Occurring during the full moon day of Vaisakha, generally in May, Vesak Day celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. Buddhists in Singapore and throughout the world attend meaningful cermonies at temples, make offerings, and perform good deeds. Buddhism being the largest religion in the nation, Singapore has many historically prominent temples that serve as religious and cultural connections to Singapore's Buddhist community and influence now and in the past.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims in Singapore break their fast with joyous festivities surrounding forgiveness, fellowship, and food on Hari Raya Aidilfitri. In the mornings, Muslims attend mosques to recognize the holiday of purification and renewal. After a sober month of holy repentance, colorful, loose-fitting clothing is donned, friends and families are visited, and delectable treats are served. Hari Raya meals provide a wide variety of irresistible delicacies, from savory traditional dishes to sweet desserts.

Deepavali

Singapore is lit up every autumn when the Hindu holiday of Deepavali comes around. For "The Festival of Lights" Hindus go through religious rituals and join together in a massive celebration to commemorate the conquering of light over darkness. Singapore's Little India is wild with food, celebrations, and bustling bazaars, centered around places like the famed Sri Veeramakaliamman and Sri Mariamman Temples -- with the Silver Chariot Procession, said to bestow blessings on the community -- and Deepavali Festival Village, a bazaar that epitomizes the excitement of the holiday.
